DBTC Basketball Club Unveils Ambitious 5-Year Program to Reclaim Championship Glory; Alumni Cebu City Mayor Garcia Shows Support

The Don Bosco Technical Center (DBTC) Basketball Club has officially launched a comprehensive 5-year program aimed at revitalizing its 12-under, 15-under, and junior divisions with the goal of reclaiming championship titles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) league.

The DBTC Greywolves last secured the junior division championship in 1997 during the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA), now known as the CESAFI Juniors Division. That victorious team featured notable players, including the Robin brothers Kenneth and Kevin, Mark Loyola, Brian Dela Peña, Archivald Montecillo, Warren Santos, D Decatoria, Manuel Gaerlan, Kristian Ione Sesante, Erlowe Cañete, Paolo Señerpida, Clark Savellon, Allain Donan, and Jonathan Reyes, under the guidance of head coach Hermes Sumalinog and assistant coach Rey Villagracia.

“We want to bring back the glory days of DBTC Greywolves basketball,” said DBTC Basketball Club Vice President Jodrick Alesna during the program launch.

To achieve this vision, the club aims to intensify its grassroots basketball program, led by coach Jed Caballes for the 12-under division, coach Densel Sabroso for the 15-under, and coach Vernini Tangarorang for the junior team.

“We know it’s going to be a long process, but we are dedicated coaches with one goal: to develop the next generation of competitive basketball players through our grassroots program,” Caballes stated. He added that in 2018, the club earned the right to represent Cebu City in the 12-under cage wars at the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet after excelling in the Cebu City Olympics.

Cebu City Mayor Raymond Garcia, an alumnus from the class of 1994, attended the launch and emphasized the significance of a grassroots program. He highlighted that players not only learn basketball fundamentals but also character-building through the Salesian philosophy, which shaped his own leadership style.

Other notable alumni pledging their support include current Cebu City Vice Mayor Don Don Honteviros, a former PBA player, and City Councilor Rey Gealon, along with UC Webmasters head coach Atty. Kenneth Kernn Sesante.

“We hope to gain more support from our alumni for this ambitious endeavor. This program emphasizes skills development, teamwork, and sportsmanship, focusing on nurturing the next generation of DBTC Greywolves. It underscores DBTC’s commitment to rebuilding a championship-caliber team and reigniting its rich basketball tradition,” said Aurelio Armidilla, President of the DBTC Basketball Club.

This event not only marked the launch of the program but also celebrated DBTC’s storied basketball heritage. The initiative is supported by Skygo and the Parents-Teachers Community Association (PTCA), thanks to the efforts of Atty. Rounald and Atty. Faith Sitoy.
