Minneapolis City, Minnesota- Thomas Joseph Thibodeau also known as Tom Thibodeau landed in “The Land of Ten Thousand Lakes” after Minnesota Timberwolves team owner Glen Taylor chose him as the new team head coach and President of Basketball Operations, team announced last Wednesday during the 75th birthday of Taylor to replaced interim coach Sam Michell.
Thibodeau, signed a 5 years contract that will receive $10 million annually, he’s one of the 3 coaches who was on the list to run the 27th ranked Timberwolves. The other two includes former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks and ESPN analyst, Jeff Van Gundy.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Tom (Thibodeau) back to the Minnesota Timberwolves”. Taylor said in a statement.
Thibodeau, 58, single, Bachelors and Masters degree in Counseling from Salem State University was former Chicago Bulls coach but fired last year, although during his rookie year in 2010-11 season he has a record of 62 wins – 20 losses which broke Phil Jackson’s 55 wins against 27 losses in his rookie Bulls season in 1989-90.
Meanwhile, Spurs assistant General Manager Scott Layden will replace Milt Newton as Timberwolves GM and reportedly received $2 million per year .
This is not the first but the second time of Thibodeau for the Timberwolves who used to be an assistant coach for two years during Bill Musselman’s time in 1989 season.
“I started my NBA career in Minnesota Timberwolves and it is an incredible opportunity to rejoin the organization at a time when they have what I believe to be the best young roster in the NBA” Thibodeau in a statement to the press.
Last Wolves playoffs appearance in 2004, expected to be in the playoff again next year. If no major changes Thibodeau will use the starting lineup includes last year’s Rookie of the Year and Canadian Andrew Wiggins, this year’s leading ROY contender Dominican-American Karl-Anthony Towns, UCLA product and back to back slam dunk King Zach LaVine, veteran Spanish point guard double R Ricky Rubio and hardworking man Gorgui Dieng.
They also have the supports of high leaper Shabazz Muhammad, ex-Euroleague player of the year Nemanja Bjelica, former Duke University playmaker and Apple Valley City, Minnesota native Tyus Jones and one- time NBA MVP Kevin “The Ticket” Garnett.
