Carbo Won The Framing an Icon Photo Contest

University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) second year mass communication student Roy Jordan Carbo got the surprise of his life after he emerged as the grand winner of the “Framing an Icon: A Visual Exploration of Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2” Photo Contest held last August 24-25, 2019 inside the MCIA Terminal 2.

The 20-year-old Carbo bested close to 300 other entries. His feat was announced during the opening of the photo exhibit last September 15, 2019 at the Upper Ground Floor, Bridgeway, Mountain Wing of SM Seaside City Cebu.

The photo exhibit showcases the top 100 entries of the USJR Photojournalism class of Iste Sesante Leopoldo and will run until September 21, 2019.

“I didn’t expect to win the top plum after the moment I saw the photographs of the other participants. I couldn’t help but felt amazed with their shots but then the question struck me if I can have the chance to win the contest,” said Carbo.

Carbo, a son of a radio and TV broadcaster based in Mindanao, was already into photography since his younger years.

“Since I was a kid, I always look at the photographs on magazines then wondered how those beautiful photos were captured,” said Carbo.

Carbo’s other photo also took the 9th spot. He was mentored by Gerard Pareja, a notable photographer in Cebu. 

Chelsea Balane entry of a sunrise at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport grabbed the second spot. She was mentored by Gerard Pareja.

The other winners are Chelsea Balane for the second place and James Rommel Tesorero for the third place. Tesorero, a second year college masscom student, was mentored by Carlo Andrew Olano of KalamiCebu.com.

The rest of the top 20 winners are Sophia Mellica Arbues (4th), Veah Vinnah Rojo (5th), Maria Neilsa Estrada, John Forrosuelo sharing the 6th spot, Nikita Bandoy (7th), Chelsea Balane (8th), Roy Jordan Carbo (9th), Bethlehem Dimag-naong (10th), Don Dungog (11th), Shan Kyle Baruc (12th), Mark Louis Laguardia (13th), Jean Mari Sarana (14th), Jenefer Jay and Sarana shared the 15th spot, Jean Mari Sarana (17th), Veah Vinnah Rojo (18th), Jean Mari Sarana (19th), Jenny Babe Nacua (20th)

According to GMR-MEGAWIDE Cebu Airport Corporation Corporate Communications and CSR Manager Avigael Maningo-Ratcliffe, they were impressed by the photographs of the USJR students and hopefully the photos they took will be soon displayed inside Terminal 2 and the newly renovated Terminal 1.

The opening was also attended by USJR University President Rev. Fr. Christopher C. Maspara,OAR, Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC)   chairman Dr. Nestor Ramirez and GMR-MEGAWIDE Cebu Airport Corporation Corporate Communications and CSR officer Edilyth Maribojoc.

Rev. Fr. Maspara and Ratcliffe spearheaded the ribbon-cutting.

The event  was made possible by the Press Photographers of the Philippines-Cebu, SM Seaside City Cebu, Virginia Foods Inc., Rich RunCebu, Boodotz Seafoods Grill, Sky Fiber, CACE, Michael Cubos of  Performance360 Global Services and RideHero.

Beginning her career as a Photojournalist at The Freeman Newspaper/Philippine Star from 2000 to 2007, she then served as an Accounts Manager from 2007 to 2008. Driven by a passion for sports, she transitioned to a Sportswriter role at CDN and expanded into news writing for Inquirer Visayas.
