Cebu City, Philippines – The Order of St. Augustine Province of Santo Niño De Cebu- Philippines is proud to announce the launch of the 500 years celebration of the arrival of the Image of Senor Santo Niño de Cebu on Nov. 13, 2019.
In 2021, the Philippines and its entire Catholic community will celebrate the quincentennial (500 years) anniversary of the introduction of christianity in the country. It will also be precisely the 500th commemoration of the arrival of the image of the Senor Santo Nino in Cebu.
It was on April 7, 1521 that the expedition of Magellan arrived in the Island of Cebu, bringing religious icons, including the image of the Senor Santo Nino. A week after, the image was given to Queen Juana as a gift from Ferdinand Magellan after she was baptized together with Rajah Humabon and a good number of natives.
The friars of the Order of Saint Augustine (Augustinians) of the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines have outlines necessary preparations for the quincentennial anniversary to spur a wider participation from the Catholic faithful and devotees of the Santo Niño to this historic religious milestone.
The Augustinians were the first missionaries in the country and the caretakers of the miraculous image since its finding in 1565.
The launching event will start with a conference at 3:00 pm followed by a concelebrated mass to be presided by the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, His excellency most Reverend Gabriele Giordano Caccia. The series of activities of the 500 years logo, website, and the activities that the Augustinians have planned and prepared for the 500 years celebrations, which will culminate in 2021.
There will also be an evening concert featuring multi-awarded San Augustin Choir and Troubadous with the special participation of the San Diego Dance Company and the Basilica Grand Chorale.
Several guests were invited to attend the launching event, including the OSA communities all over the Philippines, schools, non-government organizations, business sector, government offices, and churches, among others.
