Birthday parties always have a theme. It gives us insight into who the celebrants are, their hobbies, desires and their personality.
And the recent birthday celebration of Dr. Mila Espina certainly reveals the advocacies close to her heart – women’s and children’s rights as well as promoting Cebuano talents.
Aptly called “Celebration of Life,” friends, former students, government officials and pillars of the academe gathered at Ayala Center Cebu on Monday to celebrate the life of Dr. Espina, a day before her actual birthday.
They sang and danced in honor of the celebrant who was known for her passion in the arts and Cebuano talents especially during her stints as cultural consultant, former dean of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), past president of Zonta Club, and We Care Foundation, among others; and by spearheading Talento Cebuano, a special tribute given to Cebuanos who are able to contribute greatly to the community.
Her contribution to Cebu – its culture and arts – was just one of the reasons why University of Cebu always joined her in celebrating her birthday.
Rep. Raul del Mar of Cebu City north district, also dropped by to give a short tribute to Dr. Espina especially on her advocacies on women’s rights and women’s empowerment.
Children from the Sisters of Mary Boystown came all the way from their campus in Minglanilla town, southern Cebu, to perform with their hand bells which wowed the audience. The pupils of Sisters of Mary School Girlstown didn’t want to be outdone and also gave their own song number.
Several groups composed of alumni of USJR, among them the Renegades and Groovy Alumni, also gave a performance that sent many of the audience on their feet. Local singer Clifford Gawchua and his younger sister, Julian, serenaded the celebrant. Alumni who were not able to make it sent a video message to Dr. Espina who was visibly moved.
The celebration was capped by the awarding of the Talento Cebuanos. The awardees are Arlene Lienos, Analou Reyes, Janet Quevedo, Anmercy Romaguera, Rachel Puray Vasyan, Gerard Cabas and Edwin Joseph Casteñada.
Named valuable Josenians were John Paul Du, Jessie Camay, Azenith Lianza, Alex Usman, Phoebe Abatayo, Cherry Mae Uy, Losyle Alforque, Charles Allan Egama and Kimberly Clark Pasuit.
Hall of Fame 2019 awardees are Noel Seno, Anita Sanchez, Dr. Edgar Alosbanos (first bright scholar of USJR), Msgr. Roberto Alesna and Ramon Sebastian.
