Many businesses have been hurt globally due to the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Especially affected are entrepreneurs from the microenterprise sector.
Thus, Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities (Seed4Com), founded by Dann Diez to help improve human living conditions and to empower poverty-stricken areas, rural and last-mile communities in the Philippines, initiated activity among the urban poor women from the tailoring industry in Lapu-Lapu City.
Seed4Com formed home-based tailoring in Looc Lapu-Lapu where the tailors were provided with fabrics and cloth from Seed4Com industry partners for them to make face masks, as well as a tarpaulin to up-cycle to make envelopes, eco-friendly bags, and aprons.
These products are then marketed and sold to the Seed4Com social enterprise unit. This initiative ensures that during the quarantine period, they can still earn from their homes, while preventing the spread of COVID-19 and saving the environment.
“We are happy that the masks they made were sent to Dipolog for front liners (300 units) and around 1,000 units were sent to Guam. They also supply to retailers for them to earn as well,” said Diez.
Currently, they are making personal protective equipment (PPE) for the front liners to protect them from the viral disease COVID-19.
