Caroline Claudia Steffen and Timothy James Reed dominated the women’s and men’s pro division of the Regent Aguila IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines powered by Philam Vitality at the Shangri-la Resort and Spa, Lapu-Lapu City.
Steffen’s win will serve as her third Ironman 70.3 title this year after also winning the ones in Subic and Davao.
The Ironman 70.3 multiple-time champion completed the 1.9km swim-90km bike-21km run in 4:24:10 while Australia’s Dimity Lee Duke (4:36:48) and Cebu first-timer Courtney Gilfillan (4:39:18) took the second and third spots, respectively.
Reed of Australia, a multi-awarded triathlete, crossed the finish line in 4:01:22 followed by Mike Philips of New Zealand at 4:02:09 for the second place. Tim Van Berkel of Australia took the third spot with a time of 4:03:12.
“There were a lot of factors that motivated me to win this race. The crowd support and also the amazing support from Alaska and Sunrise,” said Reed.
In the Asian Elite Awards, the men’s title went to Nikko Huelgas after completing the race in 4:24:56 followed by August Benedicto with 4:32.44 for second place, and Yu-Hung Hsieh of Taiwan with 4:36:11 for third place.
It was Huelgas’ first Ironman 70.3 title.
“The swim was just steady. With the right strategy, I won my first 70.3 Philippines title,” said Huelgas who raced in Cebu for the first time as well.
The women’s title was won by Alexandra Ganzon after clocking 5:43:31.
The pro champions are set to receive USD 25,000 as the prize. There will also be 60 slots up for grabs for the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to be held in Taupo in New Zealand.
