Pacman and Habibi to Lead the 504th Kadaugan sa Mactan Battle Reenactment

The highly anticipated 504th Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration is set to feature two of the country’s prominent figures: world boxing champion and former senator, Manny Pacquiao, as Datu Lapu-Lapu, and the famous content creator,Crissa Liaging of Life of Habibi as Reyna Bulakna. The grand event, commemorating the historic Battle of Mactan, will take place on April 27, 2025, at the Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City.

The main highlight of this year’s festivities will be the Reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, an unforgettable theatrical performance that brings history to life with captivating performances, period costumes, and dramatic storytelling. This historical reenactment promises to be a standout moment of the festival, drawing both locals and tourists to experience the legendary clash that solidified Datu Lapu-Lapu’s legacy as the first Filipino national hero.

The Kadaugan sa Mactan, or Victory in Mactan, commemorates the 1521 battle where Datu Lapu-Lapu and his warriors successfully repelled the Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan. As one of the earliest acts of Filipino resistance against foreign colonization, the battle remains a symbol of bravery and unity, which continues to inspire and shape the cultural identity of the Filipino people.

Pacquiao’s Third Time as Lapu-Lapu

In a significant announcement, Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Officer-in-Charge Gary Lao confirmed that this will be Pacquiao’s third time portraying the heroic Datu Lapu-Lapu, a role he first took on in 2005 and again in 2015. This marks a milestone for both the event and the city as Pacquiao returns for a third reenactment, this time under the leadership of Mayor Junard Ahong Chan’s administration.

“This will be the third time that former senator Pacquiao will be portraying the role of Lapu-Lapu, and we are thrilled to have him back. Notably, all of his fees have been waived in support of this celebration,” Lao said during a press conference held at the Lanikai Seaside Restaurant in Brgy. Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

The role of Ferdinand Magellan will once again be portrayed by an Oponganon, adding a more personal touch to the reenactment and further deepening the cultural connection to the historic event.

A Week of Exciting Events

The Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration, now in its 504th year, continues to play a crucial role in promoting the heritage, culture, and unity of the people of Lapu-Lapu City. In addition to the reenactment, the festival will feature several exciting events.

The Sadsad Sa Kadaugan, a lively street dance festival at the Mactan Newtown, will showcase vibrant performances from Lapu-Lapu City’s 30 barangays. This year, the barangays will be divided into 10 clusters, each performing energetic street dances and ritual showdowns, reflecting the strength and spirit of the local communities. The competition consists of 10 clusters, each receiving a ₱500,000 subsidy. The winning cluster will take home ₱1 million, while the second and third placers will receive ₱200,000 and ₱100,000, respectively.

For food and culture enthusiasts, Kadaugan sa Mactan: Food, Fashion, and Festivities will celebrate Oponganon artistry and cuisine. The celebration will also include the Kadaugan sa Mactan Food Fest, which opens on April 4 and features 49 exhibitors, including hotels and restaurants. The festival will also feature a Mini Reenactment of the Battle of Mactan at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall lobby, offering an intimate and immersive experience of the historic event.

More to Look Forward To

Other events include a Kadaugan Job Fair, which connects job seekers with local businesses, and several exciting competitions. The Kadaugan Culinary Competition will showcase the culinary excellence of the region, while Lapu-Lapu Got Talent Season 3 will feature local performers in singing, dancing, and other extraordinary acts. A K-POP Dance Competition will also take place, showcasing the city’s dynamic K-pop-inspired dance crews.

During the press conference, the search for this year’s Datu Lapu-Lapu and Reyna Bulakna was officially launched. Gary Lao conducted the sashing ceremony for the 10 pairs of contestants competing for the prestigious roles.

Nightly performances throughout the festival will feature live music, cultural shows, and other entertainment, ensuring a lively and vibrant atmosphere each evening from April 4 to April 27, 2025.
